History
D'Youville Senior Care is forever indebted to Homer W. Bourgeois – a man of faith, wisdom, and vision.
D'Youville Senior Care was established in 1960 as D'Youville Manor, to meet the needs of an increasing frail and elderly population in Lowell. In the late 1950's the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa in Lowell, led by Provincial Superior Sr. Andre Corsini, were requested by the General Council to see to the needs of the elderly.
After much perseverance on the part of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa and local businessmen Homer Bourgeois and Paul Gagnon, D'Youville Manor came to fruition. In 1960, D'Youville Manor opened on 75 acres of land in Lowell, Massachusetts with 129 beds. Subsequently a number of beds were added, creating a 196 bed facility.
In the mid 1990's the need for a new facility was evident if quality care and patient dignity were to be maintained. A new, 208-bed state-of-the art facility was constructed on the campus and opened in December 1998. Along with the new construction came the name change from "D'Youville Manor" to our current name, D'Youville Senior Care - to reflect a futuristic vision of expanded care.
Bruyere Gardens, D’Youville’s independent living community for low-income seniors opened in 2006 as an extension of our mission to meet the growing needs of seniors in the greater Lowell community. Presently there are 63 units of affordable housing on the D’Youville campus.
D'Youville is Medicare/Medicaid certified and accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). D'Youville Senior Care is sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa, a division of the Grey Nuns. While D'Youville is sponsored by the Sisters, we remain an independent not-for-profit corporation with 501(c)(3) status. We are governed by a volunteer community board with roots throughout the Greater Lowell community and expertise across a broad range of industries including health care, business management, finance, education, and legal professions. D'Youville serves over 1,000 seniors annually, primarily from the Greater Lowell area.
