Learning Center
In April 2006, our Learning Center opened with 4 computer workstations, new bookshelves at a height suitable for all of our residents including those in wheelchairs, a new collection of books with larger script, a media center that includes DVD and voice-recording capabilities in case family members of our residents wish to create a special message for their loved one, and comfortable seating in a warm, inviting space.
The goal of the Learning Center is to provide a new place for residents to continue to learn and stay connected to their friends, family, and the world-at-large, ultimately helping to increase their sense of independence and well-being.
Through the Internet Boot Camp program hosted in our Learning Center, our residents, patients and clients throughout D'Youville have the chance to learn about the Internet and the workings of e-mail. Since the program began in August 2004, our seniors have looked forward to their weekly Internet training class taught by UMASS Lowell Professor Patrick Scollin and facilitated by our Activities Staff.
In addition to the weekly class demonstrations with Professor Scollin, our Activities Staff is on hand to help residents access their e-mail accounts periodically throughout the week. The class has ignited a new sense of learning for our residents and clients and has opened up new opportunities for them to stay connected to their friends and families.
D'Youville's Internet Boot Camp program was recently highlighted in the March 2007 edition of Nursing Homes Long Term Care Management Magazine.
The Learning Center also provides a place where our residents can meet for various clubs and activities. Whether they are interested in writing poetry, reading books, watching movies, or just socializing, our residents can use the Learning Center to pursue old passions or cultivate new ones.
We are looking for volunteers to assist our residents with using the computer during the morning hours. For more information, please contact Angela Callahan, our Volunteer Coordinator, at (978)569-1000, ext. 2618.
Funds for the Learning Center were raised through gifts made to the D'Youville Foundation.
